DRIVING FORWARD SAVINGS WITH
ESOS PHASE 1
Multi-national group with complex legal structure
ESOS aggregation procedures requried to be followed
Detailed sampling approach utilitised
Estimation methodology deployed due to various missing data issues
Client subsequently audited by Environment Agency with successful pass
Background
We were appointed by a London-headquartered automotive company very late in the day. Due to the complexities of the company’s organisational structure and much confusion about which entity held responsibility for compliance, there was a significant threat of non-compliance. The client’s objective was entirely related to compliance as opposed to the need to identify practical energy efficiency opportunities. They specifically required an advisor with excellent knowledge of the legislation and how to comply in the most timely manner.
Challenge
The client organisation had 12 legal entities, all of which were captured by ESOS compliance obligations. Many of them were shell companies with no energy consumption, yet they still needed reporting. Given such a short window to complete the compliance process we were forced to estimate data initially for the purposes of strategy development.

Solution
We conducted 6 ESOS Energy Audits mostly of smaller administrative offices where energy efficiency was not seen as a priority. We also completed a Transport Audit which accounted for over 70% of the company’s energy consumption. Data mapping was completed in parallel so that we did not hold up compliance activities, This meant that we covered over 97% of the group’s energy consumption, with only 3% qualifying as de minimis.
Results
We identified 11 main energy savings opportunities (including transport efficiency). These projects, if delivered simultaneously were estimated to save 10.4% of overall costs, or £95k per annum.
The main win for the client however was that we successfully complied with the ESOS deadlines, following due process where necessary to avoid civil penalties for directors.

At Optimised Energy we focus on outcomes rather than just deliverables. ESOS requires that companies comply with various legislative obligations, and while we have a 100% compliance record, we don’t stop there. Our approach ensures that our clients receive qualified recommendations that translate into tangible value after the compliance process. Many of our Compliance engagements lead to our team consulting on implementation activities.
