Background
Initially engaged over 10 years ago to help with CCA management, we have gone on to assist with CRC, ISO 50001, energy procurement and ESOS within the group spanning the whole of the UK and Ireland. With the client equally focused on delivering kWh savings, we have been working in partnership to deliver energy cost reduction through capital projects.
Challenge
As with most manufacturing sites, energy efficiency is not normally considered a key function within the business. The challenge for us was to alter the mindset of site personnel through behavioural change, making them aware of the overall impact of energy on the business and simple measures they could implement to drive improvement in energy efficiency, thus improving company profitability. It is important that Capital projects meet rigorous payback criteria, and all projects can be implemented without having a negative impact on production operation or output.
Solution
Our engineers carried out an initial investment grade feasibility study to identify and quantify projects that met the Board’s investment criteria. We then worked with our network of technology specialists to draft detailed project specifications, carry out competitive tenders, and work with contractors to deliver solutions. As part of this we installed a comprehensive M&T system, capturing circuit level data on a 5-min basis which is now being used to identify energy wastage and drive behavioural change across the site.
Results
The output of our analysis and project identification has resulted in the delivery of 15 projects within the past 12 months, and a savings projection of £250,000 for 2018. All projects are measured and verified according to International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP). The site now has full visibility of its energy costs at circuit level and this is also being used to drive improvement in budgeting and forecasting within their finance dept.
