What’s your role at Optimised Energy?
I head up the manufacturing business unit, looking after all services into this sector.
What’s the best thing about your job ?
I love manufacturing and seeing how stuff gets made, as well as the relationships that you make with clients over a number of years. They become friends eventually.
What are your hopes for our industry?
That we make energy generation both Net Zero and exceedingly cheap. Too many people worry about fuel bills and have to make heart breaking choices over the winter on when and for how long they can have heating at home.
What does a typical day look like for you?
It is mainly spent liaising with clients and colleagues, continually trying to deliver value and innovation.
What would people never guess you do in your role?
I’m an engineer by training, so being able to offer a deep engineering understanding of process and application is something that clients aren’t normally expecting.
What did you want to be when growing up?
I wanted to be a dentist. I had originally planned to join the Army as a dentist. My daughter is now training to be a dental nurse.
If you could witness any historical event, what would you see?
There are 2 events that I would loved to have been at. Live aid in 1985, and the rugby world cup final in 1995. Both fairly recent but watching Live Aid on the TV in Northern Ireland as a member of the Queen fan club was amazing. Also to see Nelson Mandela handing the Webb Ellis cup to Francois Pienaar in a springbok shirt must have been truly magical.
If given a chance who would you like to be for the day?
I would like to be my son. He suffers from dyslexia and Irlens syndrome and I think fully understanding the day to day impact this has on his life first hand would help me a lot.
What do you like to do when you’re not in the office?
I like to cycle, run and play golf. Cycling is a truly liberating and uplifting pastime.
What’s your personal mantra?
Draw a white line down your field of vision, put everything you can change on one side and everything you can’t change on the other. Now only focus on the side with stuff you can change.
What inspires you?
I’m 47 so what inspired me 20 years ago and now are totally different. People who are selfless, who go out of their way to help others without having to take a selfie and upload it to social media. I can find inspiration in the simplest of things if I’m honest.
